Truck Campers
The two great advantages of truck campers over other RV are towing and mobility.
You Are What You Pull
Theoretically, you can tow with any motorized RV. The reason we rarely see sport fishing boats behind Class A motor homes is that those big rigs need all the power they have just to move themselves. There is not a lot of horsepower left to tote a big boat. The other big reason is that it is simply inconvenient to deal with the boat and the motor home at the same time. It is hard enough for most people to back a trailer down a boat launch ramp. Doing it with a 30 ft motor coach is asking for trouble.
What if you are on your big fishing vacation but the launch ramp is down the road from your campsite? You could leave your expensive boat in the water, if there is someplace you can tie it up. If you are towing with a motor home, you will need to break camp to go get the boat out of the water every night and put it back in each morning. With a truck camper, you get to your camp ground, unhitch the boat, set up camp and take that out of the truck. Now the truck is free to take the boat to the ramp, and at the end of a hard day on the water, your "home away from home", the truck camper is right where you left it. All you have to do is relax (after you clean the fish!)
Go Anywhere, Any Time
The nicest advantage of the truck camper is its mobility. These are truly go-anywhere camping rigs. It is mounted on a four wheel drive pickup can be taken on roads where travel trailers would fear to tread.
There are truck campers on the market which are frankly huge. These provide nearly as much comfort as a motor home or a trailer, but owning one means owning a huge pickup. This means that you will have to pay for that much more fuel. With a huge loaded in the back of one of these monsters, handing becomes ponderous. When your camper gets this huge, you will be tempted to get to where you are going and just stay there.
The truck camper choice of many long distance expeditions is the pop-up camper. These are usually light enough to mount in fuel efficient half-ton pickups. When the roof is lowered for travel, the truck camper with a popup will handle nearly as well as an empty pickup. The low profile means less wind resistance.
Downsides
It must be pointed out that to get the towing convenience, you will need to be prepared to sacrifice some floor space and some luxury, especially in a pop-up. Less than you would imagine, however. It sacrifices some storage space for greater mobility, and it is nearly impossible to insulate the soft sides as well as a hard side camper. This lack of insulation is not as troublesome as it would seem. Even in nearly arctic conditions, the compact space can be well heated by a relatively tiny heat source.
